Santanu Bag, Ph.D.
Founder & CEO
Dr. Santanu Bag is the founder, CEO and scientific advisor of AsterTech LLC. His research involves additive manufacturing of a variety of inorganic and inorganic-organic hybrid materials for printed electronics and energy-related applications. He worked as a Senior Research Scientist at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio from 2014 to 2018. Prior to joining AFRL in 2014, Dr. Bag was with IBM Research, NY from 2010 to 2013. While there he had two different job roles; initially he was a Materials Research Scientist at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Centre, and then he moved to the Albany Nanotechnology Research Instituteas a Unit Process Engineering Professional Staff Member. At IBM, Dr. Bag was involved in several multi-company joint development projects including ink-based earth-abundant thin-film solar cells, process integration for 3D FinFET devices, and high-K metal-gate stack engineering for next generation’s microelectronics. Some of the alliance partner companies he worked with includeSamsung, STMicroelectronics, Global Foundries, Solar Frontier, DelSolar, TOKetc.
Dr. Bag received his Ph.D. in Inorganic Materials Chemistry in 2009 from Northwestern University, where he worked with Professor Mercouri Kanatzidis on solution processing of chalcogenide semiconductors for environmental clean-up, solar harvesting and catalysis applications. He has publications in top-notch journals like Science, Nature Chemistry, Nano Energy, JACS, Adv. Ener. Mater., Energy Environ. Sci.etc and his research works have been highlighted several times in numerous national and international media (BBC News, Chemistry World, London Times etc.). He has won a number of awards and fellowships (American Chemical Society Young Investigator Award, IBM Invention Achievement Award, LANL Director’s Fellowship, NRC Fellowship etc.) for his innovative research, and is a lead inventor on over 10 patents and patent applications. Dr. Bag has been an active member of various international research communities, and organized many national and international symposia and workshops in materials science research. In 2017, he founded AsterTech LLC which aims to commercialize ink-based direct-write solar cells that enable seamless deployment of light-harvesting functionality in the form of products and surfaces.
